6 mm steel plate weight

Weight per square metre, per sheet, and a calculator for any size

A 6 mm steel plate weighs 47.1 kg/m² (9.65 lb/ft²). A 1220 × 2440 mm (4 × 8 ft) sheet weighs 140.2 kg.

How the weight is worked out

Weight (kg) = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.85

For a 1220 × 2440 mm sheet: 1.22 × 2.44 × 6 × 7.85 = 140.2 kg. The factor 7.85 is the density of steel, 7,850 kg/m³ (the unit mass of steel in EN 1993-1-2 §3.2.2), for each millimetre of thickness.

Nominal weights. Real plates differ slightly because of rolling tolerances on thickness (for example EN 10029 or ASTM A6/A6M), and galvanizing or paint adds weight. Stainless steel and aluminium have different densities.
