40 mm steel plate weight

Weight per square metre, per sheet, and a calculator for any size

A 40 mm steel plate weighs 314 kg/m² (64.31 lb/ft²). A 2000 × 6000 mm sheet weighs 3,768.0 kg.

How the weight is worked out

Weight (kg) = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.85

For a 2000 × 6000 mm sheet: 2 × 6 × 40 × 7.85 = 3,768.0 kg. The factor 7.85 is the density of steel, 7,850 kg/m³ (the unit mass of steel in EN 1993-1-2 §3.2.2), for each millimetre of thickness.

Nominal weights. Real plates differ slightly because of rolling tolerances on thickness (for example EN 10029 or ASTM A6/A6M), and galvanizing or paint adds weight. Stainless steel and aluminium have different densities.
